NR 283 ATI basic concepts #1 Fluids and Electrolytes NR 283 ATI basic concepts #1 Fluids and Electrolytes Basic concepts of fluids and electrolytes: Nursing Interventions WHO? WHEN? WHY? HOW? What is the nurses role? Decreased: -Give IV fluids or fluids PO to rehydrate. -Take vital signs: BP, temp. -Take labs (osmolarity). Increased: -Urine output. -Fluid intake. Decreased: -Monitor intake and output. Increased: -Monitor BP. Edema: -Monitor fluid intake and urine output. -Monitor BP. Dehydration: - Monitor intake and urine output -Monitor BP. Underlying Principles Decreased in conditions such as: -Dehydration, blood loss, increase in urinary output, body fluid suctioning. Increased in conditions such as: - Edema - Low urine output -Drinking too much Decreased in conditions such as: -Dehydration Increased in conditions such as: -High blood pressure. Causes of edema 1. Increased capillary hydrostatic pressure.(BP) 2. Loss of plasma proteins 3. Obstruction of the lymphatic circulation. 4. Increased capillary permeability. 5. Cellular injury. Four causes of dehydration: 1. Vomiting and diarrhea 2. Excessive sweating 3. Diabetic ketoacidosis 4. Insufficient water intake Related Content (E.G., DELEGATION, LEVELS OF PREVENTION, ADVANCE DIRECTIVES) Intravascular space Fluid in blood vessel Interstitial space Fluid in between the cells and tissues Two common fluid imbalances 1) Edema Definition: Overload of fluid 2) Dehydration Definition: Insufficient amount of fluid.
