Fixed Prosthetics
Intro
Fixed prosthodontics is the specialized area of dentistry devoted to the
replacement of missing teeth with cast prosthesis that are permanently
cemented in place
Client Considerations
Medical history
Age
Is the client in good health?
Is the client receive medication?
Does the client suffer from any systemic disease that might affect the
form & stability and underlying bone?
Dental history
Client's chief complaint
How long the client has been edentulous?
How did the client lose his/her teeth?
What has been the client's experience with prosthetic appliances?
Week 7 - Prosthodontics 1
, Determine whether the failure of the appliance was mechanical or
psychological
Examination of intra/extra-oral tissues
Number & location of missing teeth
Periodontal status
Condition of the remaining natural teeth
Occlusal relationship
Impressions for study models
Radiographs
Extra-oral photographs for aesthetics
Aesthetics & Economics
Indications for fixed prosthetics
1 or 2 adjacent teeth are missing in the same arch
The supportive tissues are healthy
Suitable abutment teeth are present
The patient is in good health & wants the prosthesis places
Week 7 - Prosthodontics 2
, The patient has the skills and motivation to maintain good oral hygiene
Contraindications for fixed prosthesis
The supportive tissues are disease or missing
Suitable abutment teeth are not present
The patient is in poor health
The patient is not motivated to have the prosthesis placed
The patient has poor oral hygiene habits
The patient cannot afford the treatment
Plan of care
Thoroughly evaluate patient's dental condition before prosthodontic
treatment
Obtain (necessary):
Detailed medical & dental histories
A thorough intraoral examination
Diagnostic models
A current series of full mouth radiographs
