3. CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONNAIRE

Complete the following open-ended questions to the best of your ability: Please give as much
information as possible.
1. Description of your school (location, age, facilities, how many learners, how many
teachers, LOLT, etc.)
Inanda Seminary is a well resourced private boarding school with 416 learners
and 37 teachers located in the outskirts of Durban (Inanda). The school is 151
years old. The facilities of the school are as follows:
● A storeroom
● Electricity
● Internet
● Laboratories
● Smart boards
● Computers
● Textbooks
● Media centre ( school library)
● Data projectors

2. Description of your classroom (size, facilities, learning and teaching support materials,
classroom atmosphere, etc.)
Inanda Seminary classes are spacious with 25 learners maximum per class. The class
atmosphere is conductive for teaching and learning. The equipment in the classes are
as follows:
● A computer
● Data projector
● Whiteboard
● Whiteboard markers
● Screen

3. Description of your learners (number per class, level of readiness to learn, their home
and environmental conditions etc.)
A class consists of 18- 25 learners maximum. The majority of learners are from the
middle income class and they are able to pay the school fees whereas others have
sponsors.
4. How did the information you have gathered in Questions 1 to 3 affect your lesson
planning, teaching and assessment? How did you adapt your lessons, methods and
resources for your particular school?
The information I gathered worked to my advantage when preparing lessons. My
lesson preparation included LTSM, as the school has very good resources.

5. Description of your mentor/subject/learning area teacher (knowledge, teaching
experience, helpfulness, guidance, etc.). My mentor contributed a lot to my teaching
experience. She guided me through both planning and delivery of my lessons. She was
always available to assist with content, teaching methods, teaching techniques and
classroom management. Last but not least she gave me a tutorial on administration that
comes with being a teacher and fitting in with the culture of the school.

3

, 6. Description of your personal background (Are you teaching at present? If so, for how
long and which subjects? Description of your qualifications (where and when did you
acquire them?).
I do not teach at the moment.

7. Description of any other appropriate experience/information, which has had an
influence on your teaching practice experience
I have learned the importance of making mistakes. I have learned that as teachers we
are not perfect and also we should treat mistakes as a learning opportunity. With being
honest about my mistakes and imperfections, I was able to also form stronger
connections with the students. Forming relationships with my learners is one of the
important aspects that I have always looked forward to.

8. Description of your experience with Unisa’s teaching practice arrangements,
placements, school visits, support and so on
This year in terms of placement UNISA was a bit slow rather their service was poor
because I sent my placement form ages ago and still I have not received any response.
I have never received any school visit from the institute. TPS3704 lecturer offered
support and also was always there to answer questions and clarify everything that I did
not understand.

9. Short account of your overall teaching practice experience (positive and/or negative)
Two words that I would use to describe my 12.5 days would be new and rambunctious! I
have really learned a lot about creating a positive learning environment for my students.
A positive learning environment encourages active engagement in learning, and self
motivation. I have learned that as a teacher you need to create strategies to make a
smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for
themselves and for one another, participate in decision making, and worked
collaboratively and independently and it is so important in the first week to create a
positive learning environment where kids feel welcome and safe because it sets the
tone for the rest of the year.

10. Did you conduct yourself in terms of the South African Council of Educators Code of
Conduct?
Yes, I did and the principal commended me of following the South African Council of
Educators Code of Conduct.
