The Communicable disease I have chosen for my topic of research is the Zika Virus.
The Zika Virus was first discovered in 1947. The virus itself is named after its origin noted
in the Zika Forest. Originally the virus was contracted from Mosquitos and first noted in
Monkeys. Later, in 1952, the first human case was detected. The symptoms of the Zika
Virus are similar to many other symptoms of disease and because of this, it is likely that
these symptoms have been diagnosed as such.
Outbreaks of the Zika Virus have been noted in Southeast Asia as well as the
Pacific Islands and Africa from the early 1960s to 1980s, there have also been periodic
instances of human infections that were found throughout Africa and Asia, usually
accompanied by mild ailment.
The timeline of the spread of Zika virus has ranged between the year 1947 to 2016. In
1947, the virus was noted by scientists performing testing for yellow fever in the Zika forest
of Uganda. Again, the Zika virus was noted in samples from a monkey. The following year
of 1948, the virus was noted in mosquitoes, on a tree platform in the Zika forest. Finally, the
first human cases were noted in the year of 1952 in Uganda in the United Republic of
Tanzania. Between the years of 1969 to the year 1983, Zika virus expanded to equatorial
Asia, India, Indonesia,
Malaysia and Pakistan. The virus was noted in mosquitoes in these countries. In Africa,
sporadic human cases occurred but there were no outbreaks detected and the disease itself in
humans was noted to be rare and again with mild symptoms. In the year 2007, the virus
spread from Africa and Asia. This was noted to be the first large outbreak in humans on the
Pacific island of Europe, in the Federated States of Micronesia. Prior to this occurrence,
there were no outbreaks noted
and only 14 noted cases of Human Zika Virus documented worldwide. Between the years of
2013 to 2014 the virus caused outbreaks in the Pacific Islands, French Polynesia, Easter
Island, the Cook Islands and New Caledonia. The outbreak in French Polynesia resulted in
thousands of suspected infections and was meticulously investigated. In February 2016, the
world health organization declared a public health emergency of International concern
related to the Zika virus. There have been no further noted Zika Virus outbreaks to date.
Many people who have the Zika virus display mild symptoms, some displaying no
symptoms at all. The mosquitos that are known to spread the virus through their bite can
spread the virus day and night, there is no timeframe. The most common Zika symptoms are
fever, rash, headache, joint pain, muscle pain and red eyes. The most severe symptom is
noted to be microcephaly.
