Nursing 514: Organizational Leadership and Informatics
A true leader requires someone in touch with themselves. As an APRN leading a cohesive team, we will need to understand our own behaviors and values, and be able to adjust accordingly. Having a true understanding of these processes, through various self-assessments, will allow a better introspection and incorporation of the APRNs leadership style and reveal areas that can be improved upon.
Leadership styles vary as much as the person doing the leading. From experience, the leadership style that seems to be the most effective in a rapidly changing environment like healthcare is that of a situational leader. According to St. Thomas University (2014, p 1) a situational leader is an adaptive leader, one whose strategy “encourages leaders to take stock of their team members, weigh the many variables in their workplace and choose the leadership style that best fits their goals and circumstances. In the words of leadership theorist Ken Blanchard, “In the past a leader was a boss. Today’s leaders can no longer lead solely based on positional power.”
