Procrastination is the repeated behavior of postponement or delaying of a particular intended
action. Most people tend to postpone the things they find difficult, contradictory, oppressive,
unpleasant or just boring. A task that raises a concern or is overwhelming is very easy to avoid.
Procrastination can also be as a result of lack of confidence. Procrastination is said to be a more
of a social norm rather than a deviance. This can easily affect the performance of a person or the
ability to achieve a particular goal.
Procrastination can have several effects on a person academically. Most students tend to
procrastinate due to forgetting about tasks, lacking clarity about the outcome they desire, lack of
enforcement of deadlines, distraction, the fear to fail, more than one commitment by students and
resistance. Academic procrastination is mostly associated with some negative effects such as,
mental and physical health, worse performance academically and worse emotional wellbeing. In
this case a person who has low self-esteem is bound to fail academically. Students in these cases
face worse grades, increased misconduct academically, an increase in the chances for dropping
out, worse exam scores as well as increased course failures and course withdrawals. The quality
of academic work is usually low with people who procrastinate. Academic procrastination causes
an increase in negative emotions and stress. Stress on the other hand causes exhaustion which in
turn increases the chances of people to procrastinate leading to a worse performance
academically. It becomes easy for a student to set goals but hard to achieve it due to
procrastination, Meeting goals set is all about taking action. The goals set should be truthful and
in alignment to what a person wants to achieve to avoid procrastination.
