1. Obstructions
a. Small bowel obstruction `
i. Upper abdominal distention
ii. N/V (may contain fecal matter)
iii. Blood possible in stool
b. Large bowel obstruction
i. Lower abdominal distention
ii. Lower cramping
iii. Tx: NGT-place in high fowler’s position, x-ray for placement, hear
peristalsis above but now below obstruction, decreased or absent bowel
sounds.
2. Appropriate diet for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis)
a. High calories, high protein, high vitamins, lower fiber meals. No caffeine or
alcohol
b. Offer ensure. NO LACTOSE (Dairy)
3. Know what may be included in a nursing plan for patients with gastroenteritis
a. Inflammation of stomach or small bowel from virus or bacteria (norovirus)
b. Encourage fluids such as Gatorade, Powerade, Pedialyte
c. N/V, abdominal cramping, diarrhea – do NOT take Imodium
d. Typically lasts 3 days, elderly needs seen much sooner for hydration status
e. Wash fruits and vegetables
f. Do not eat/drink after an infected person
4. High risk for developing GERD:
a. Obesity
b. Autoimmune
c. NGT
d. Diet: no chocolate, no acidic foods, no caffeine
e. Pregnancy
f. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
i. Burning
ii. Indigestion
iii. Belching
iv. Dysphagia
v. Constipation
vi. Diarrhea
vii. Bloody stools
g. Diagnosis
i. Barium swallow
ii. Barium enema
iii. Increase fluids to flush out barium
