Assess the effects on the service users of three different discriminatory practices in
health and social care settings.
Introduction.
Discrimination is everywhere, all over the world people are discriminated against
especially in health and social care. People are discriminated against because of their
age, gender, weight, height, religion, sexuality etc. The word discrimination means that
someone has treated you differently or unfairly because of what you believe, how you
dress/what you look like. No matter how hard society tries to get rid of discrimination it
will always be a part of the world because everyone has their own views and everyone
has the right to speak freely no matter how wrong you may think their opinion may be.
The first form of discrimination I will be discussing is direct discrimination. Direct
discrimination is a someone is being treated unfairly due to a certain characteristic that
they possess. This is also known as ordinary direct discrimination; this type of
discrimination can be lawful if it is considered objectively justifiable. Another type of
direct discrimination is when a person is discriminated against due to a characteristic of
a family member or colleague etc. This is known as direct discrimination through
association. The final type of direct discrimination is where someone believes a person
to have a certain characteristic without seeing if they possess it or not. This is called
direct discrimination by perception. Direct discrimination is not always intended, this
means a person may be discriminatory without the realization of doing so. In a case like
this a claim can be made and can succeed. This type of discrimination can make people
feel intimidated and worried as it can cause mental harm and, in some cases, physical
harm, this can be if someone was discriminated against and pushed out of the group
they will feel as if they did something wrong and if it continues to happen then they may
feel as if they want to hurt themselves or end their life or someone else’s who is causing
them harm because they just want their pain and hurt to go away. An example could be
an estate agent refusing to rent a house to someone with an Asian origin as the landlord
does not want an Asian family to live there. This could affect the family mentally as they
could be traumatized by the situation and it could cause harm to the family if they had
nowhere else to live.
Another form of discrimination is indirect discrimination, this type of discrimination is far
less obvious than other types of discrimination and is usually not intentional. This type
of discrimination comes when something is put in place such as a plan or a rule which in
turn causes a disadvantage to people with a certain characteristic. The way this type of
discrimination can be identified is if the PCP (provision, criterion or practice) has or will
affect those who share the characteristic in a negative way whereas it may benefit those
without that characteristic. The employer can usually not give a justifiable reason as to
why these rules or plans are put into place. This type of discrimination can dishearten
people can cause them distress and worry which could lead to a buildup of stress
causing them to feel ill and tired constantly or to lose focus and motivation. For
example, if a job applicant needed to attend an interview but the manager refused an
